92 GTI with wet Passenger Carpet

Jun 16, 2004 3 Replies

Any time it's out in a hard rain, I end up with a sopping wet passenger side carpet but I cannot find how the water is getting into the car.

Does anyone have experience with a leaking door or windshield on these vehicles?

Thanks for any advice as to where to look.

You likely have clogged drains at the bottom of the door and/or a door pane. vapour barrier which no longer seals. The bottom of the door fills up and overflows into the passenger compartment.

Most likely its the plastic "vapour" barrier. Water gets past the outside window seal and runs down into the door. Its tends to hit the bottom of the plastic barrier then runs straight into the car between the door itself and the inner doror panel. And of course the drain holes should be clear as well. The only fix I have found was to re-seal the plastic barrier with rtv silicone

Also if you have a sunroof the sunroof drains could be clogged, and check the drip tray drains at the rear of the engine compartment as well. Finally if your car has A/C make sure that the evaporator drain is not clogged (although you did say hard rain so I doubt that's your problem.)
