94 Golf III GL 2.0 Seat Belts

Hello, I have a VW Golf III GL with a 2.0L motor. I dont have airbags and the seatbelts are those door mounted ones.

The problem that I am seeing with the front (chest) belt (the one that hooks to the door area) is that they dont lock up if pulled on suddenly. I think its not the normal behavior since the whole point of having a seat belt is lost. The belt in the lap does lock up.

-Anyone has any suugestions to try and fix it at home?

-If I have to get them replaced, can I get the 3-point seat belts instead or will it be too much of an expense?

Thanks,

-Shoaib

I'm not 100% certain, but as I recall, the type of seat belt that latches to the door uses a different type of inertial mechanism than those 3-point all in one that you can pull on quickly and they lock up. The ones I've seen that latch to the door do lock up if you hit the brakes hard or come to a sudden stop. Try hitting your brakes in an open area with no one around and see if the belt locks. As I recall on my old '80 Rabbit, the manual mentioned this, and said that they are not designed to lock up upon being pulled quickly. I know that was quite a while ago, but I think the same kind of seat belt might have been in use in your '94.

Thanks for your reply Ed.

I called the dealership and they confirmed that the seatbelt is supposed to lock up.

Has anyone else had similar problems with their Golfs? How did you fix it? The dealership was trying to convince me to have the seatbelts replaced and they are around $250 a piece. Does anyone have any ideas regarding this?

Thanks, Shoaib
