96 golf won’t start problem

hi, i have a starting problem with my 96 golf. car runs fine when push started, no problems of any kind, but can?t start with ignition switch. starter motor spins (or at least sounds like it) but the engine doesn?t turn over.

12v at the starter terminal, good ground connection, 12v at relay, can?t figure this s*&^ out. i have a buyer that?s excited and i don?t know what to do. took it to a mechanic, changed the starter and he said "it started once and then after that it?s broke... the starter spins and the engine doesn?t turn."

does this sound like an electrical problem, or is it something in the starter assembly itself??

i?ve been stuck with this for weeks and i?m losing hope on fixing it myself. aside from this annoying little problem, it?s a good car and i?d own one again with a doubt =)

If you hear the starter spinning but the motor isn't turning you need a new starter. It sounds like the solenoid that throws out the gear isn't doing it's job.
