97 Golf 2.0 Timing belt

Why am i being quoted $400 to change the timing belt? Whats the big expense here? Seem high?

It could include replacing all the seals too! Ask what you are getting for the $400!

I've been quoted $140.80 by a non vw garage on my 96 golf 1.4 mk3 your's a mark 4 by 97 ??? This is a british price mind you. If you read in a manual on doing it yourself you can see why they charge so much. it's hard work, and because they CAN charge so much to do it. One thing i would make sure is that their work is guaranteed for a year afterwards, so at least if your belt does go and destroy's your engine you can claim back on it. Getting mine done soon at 50k miles :)
