'98 Jetta 2.0L tanny stuff

Well, this car (the one that stranded me in the blizzard last week) also has a problem where it pops out of reverse. In addition, second gear is a bit balky. I think this is why the last owner traded it in.

A quick Google showed me that these trannys are famous for these problems. I hear it's the G 020 tranny... wasn't that the imfamous "self machining" tranny from 20 years ago? My '89 Golf, which didn't have the G 020, has gone over 245,000 miles with only a single change of gear lube for maintenance.

Okay, I can pull the tranny. Beyond that, how difficult is it to repair this tranny?

The trans are very durable, but no if the past owner liked to grind into "R"! That said I have a rebuilt unit here in my basement for sale if you are interested? It's a DFQ code and fit most from 95-99 2.0l

How much?

Thanks!
