98 passat climatronic air-con question.

Hi,

When I start the car the display of the climatronic air-con flashes for a few seconds, which I believe indicates a fault with the air con. The garage that I go to have told me that in this case it is a pressure sensor and a flap motor that need replacing. They also said that whilst the parts to do the job are only 70 pounds, the labour charge brings the cost of the whole job to around 600. The man says (and I have no reason to doubt him) that this is because the dashboard must be removed to be able to replace the parts, he also says that the job will require the "refrigerant cannister" (or some such thing) for the air-con to be refilled, which requires special tools.

Originally, I was hoping to remove the dashboard myself, replace the necessary parts, and then take the regfrigerant cannister thing to a place that had the necessary tools, and get them to do the refill. However reading the haynes manual the implication seems to be that you really shouldn't do anything that involves disconnecting anything to do with the refrigeration system, and that you should just take it to the dealer.

Erm, so, I guess my question is, has anyone out there got any relevant experiance of this sort of thing that they might be able to pass on? Does anyone know if removing this refrigerant cannister is a feasible approach, or if my interpretation of the haynes manual is correct?

Cheers,

Sam,

I never believe anything in a repair manual, but in this case it's a DIYer repair unless you have the tools to recover/recycle Freon.
