I have a 98 Jetta, And it will not start. I took it to the shop a couple times and the guy said it was the distributor so he replaced that. It ran fine for a few days then went downhill. Sometimes when I try to start it, it cranks for a few seconds and I have to turn the key a few times for it to actually start. Sometimes it won't even crank. Does anyone know what I can do? Thanks!

Solution, find another shop who knows how to find your issue versus guessing!
I think the engine should run if you even remove the small plug at the side of the distributor. 8^o This also indicates that your engine is NOT the VR6 nor possibly a TDI. But I guess the TDI does have a fuel distributor. ;-)
Take it to a shop that can actually diagnose what is wrong with it. Might be just the ign. switch, battery, starter or something else that is simple. Of course you did not mention if you were having any problems with the alarm system.
Ign. coil is a possibility too if the crank sensor is fine. But neither of these should stop the engine from cranking.............starting yes..........but cranking no!
