A3 jetta cranks but no ignition...

hi,

i was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem. my A3 jetta (96 gls) will not start. the engine cranks, but there is no ignition. i checked the two obvious places to check, the fuel pump and the fuse for it. the fuse is fine, but the fuel pump does not prime when i turn the key to "on." but i know it's not the pump that's broken, because 1) there is no voltage coming to the pump, and 2) if i take the electricity coming to the tail light and patch it to the pump, it primes (the whining sound).

i don't have the wiring scheme, so i don't know where to start the hunt for the problem. any ideas?

Fuel Pump Relay Ignition Switch

Do have spark at the plug? Had the same problem & it was the ignition coil. First check would be the cap & rotor (also cheapest), they're prone to go, especially when its damp out. Your fuel pump controls seems fine, the pump comes on only for a moment while turning the ignition key. Fuel filter blockage would be more gradual. You could check fuel flow by disconnecting the line into the fuel pressure regulator, turn on the fuel pump using a switch in series with your 12V from the rear light. Measure the amount of fuel in 30sec of pump operation. You should probably get at least 0.5 litre (depending on voltage). Good luck.

Gavin.
