I'd be grateful if anyone can give me any information on a VW Part #
1J0 909 601A. It's a VW Airbag module.
The question I have is - does anyone know if this module covers side air bags and seat belt tensioners as well as front air bags? I've got to replace my existing module (different no) and a breaker has sold me this part. I know my car has side air bags and seat belt tensioners but I have a feeling this module doesn't cover these.
There is only one airbag control module that operates all of the airbags and seatbelt tensioners.
However, you mention "a breaker has sold me this part". Since you are across the pond from me, I take it to mean you got a used unit from a wrecked car? If so, you may of just wasted your money. IMHO, buying used airbag parts is like buying used underwear... sure you'll save a few bucks, but do you want strange skid marks touching you? Anyway, if you got the unit from a car that had deployed any airbags or seatbelts, then it won't work anymore.
VW will use the same part number airbag control module in a wide range of cars, but since varios cars will have/not have varios features, the airbag control module uses a system of codes to tell it what car it is in and what features that car has. If the airbag control module is not coded correctly, it will flag the airbag light on the dash and it is unknown if the safety system will work at all.
I appreciate your comments about the module - I have been assured that the module is in full working order (undeployed) - if it's not they'll refund my money.
The price difference between the dealer part - $700, breaker part - $170 so I thought it worth a go.
I'm taking it to a VAG electronics specialist on Monday who diagnosed the faulty module that's in when he tried resetting the airbag module which is something he has done in the past.
The only issue I had was that if the thing *fries* because its the wrong module, I won't get my money back from the breaker.
The VAG diagnostic will confirm whether or not it has been deployed and can / can't be reset. If it can't be reset I'll send it back. Check out

If putting the module in place somehow causes it to fry itself because it's not the right model for the car then it's cost me $170 and that's before the auto electrician has had a chance to try anything.
