Any Underhood changes in the 2005 Jetta TDI?

I have a 2003 Jetta TDI that I really like. Could have gotten a 2004 but didn't like the new dash and the crome so I passed.

Does anyone know if there are any changes in the 2005 that are other than how it looks. Is it basically the 2004 TDI engine in a new suit?

The Pumpe Duse engine...

What don't you like about the new dash? The seamless airbag cover, or the lack of pop-out cupholders?

2004 and up are TDI-PD engines.

Well, I actually have double vision to a degree so the bright chrome surrounding the odometer and speedometer is VERY distracting. I also think the chrome on the outside of the car breaks the line of the car. Just a personal preference.

Cool. Thank you.

Chrome on the speedometer... Thought it was brushed metal - I suppose if it is distracting, then that could be a problem.

The outside chome.... Looks good on the Passat, makes the Jetta look tacky, I agree with you, it has to go!... Looks alright on a burgundy car.

Keep your 2003... If you want more power, then buy a tuning box, if you can find a source for one (I have a source in Ontario) - With a tuning box you can have more power then with a Pumpe Duse motor.

I guess I am a bit old fashioned in that I am not too crazy about all the hard lines and metal on the inside of the newer cars.

I would love to have a Passat but can not afford one and needs a stick to be happy.

Who is the guy who keeps pointing people to the tdiclub.com? :-) I know I have been on there but not recently. I need to go more often.

So, I was actually asking about the wrong thing. I just assumed the new diesel Jetta would be coming out immediatly. I wonder if it will be made for the cleaner diesel?

The 2006 (A5) Jetta (you and I have A4 cars, with the original style TDI engine, newer A4's have the PD motor) will have the same PD-TDI as the

04/05's do ... for now.

So, clean diesel burning Jettas won't be around until at least 2008?

It's going to be a long while, sad to say :-(.

I don't know if my next car will be diesel - I'm getting tired of the lack of power (I enjoy revving an engine) and the powerfull diesels may never even get here.

It's too bad they can't fit the 2.0 TDI used in the 04/05 Passat into the new Jetta. It develops 35% more horsepower, and almost 50% more torque than the 1.9 TDI. That's substantially more torque than ANY gas engine currently available in the Jetta/Golf/GTI/Passat.

It also seems a lot smoother to me. If I didn't know better I'd swear it had more than 4 cylinders.

I got my 05 Passat TDI in mid-September and by the time I was out of the break in period it was just about time for snow tires. I've been enjoying the last few weeks, now that the roads are dry and I'm back to summer tires.

But I gather the 2.0 TDI is only for longitudinal mounting, won't go into the Jetta/Golf or the upcoming new Passat.

The 2.0TDI is available in the Golf and other smaller VWs in Europe. I have a Touran with the 2.0TDI and the DSG-transmission :)

So there is a bigger TDI VW could use in the Jetta, Golf and upcoming new Passat in North America with today's fuel. The excuses about "cleaner fuel first" are just excuses.

Thanks for the info!

Yes. It could be a marketing thing though. Passat owners might be a bit annoyed that their engine could be had in the smaller/lighter Golf/Jetta.

Agreed. Well AFAIK the 2.0 and 1.9 are now both PD engines and need cleaner fuel. But getting that cleaner fuel to the pumps at the local station I think is probably easier than they lead us to believe.

I have no doubt it would.

My little 2003 Jetta TDI seems to have plenty of power. Granted it doesn't leave the line like my BMW 735 or my Chevy Tahoe, but then again it does not require in flight refueling. My wife's new Touareg V6 seems a little underpowered, but given its comfort she won't notice. In Europe recently I drove the Touareg with the Audi V6 diesel. What a delight. I hope it comes to America or Canada.

I concur,

but I might add my 2002 Golf TDI with a $300 Upsolute performance chip makes

120hp and 200-205 ft/lbs of torque.

I can launch like a bandit through any stoplight :-) and cruise up any hill with the v6's. I can also cruise at 130-140 km/h all day through the mountains.

I've got a PSI tuning box on my 99.5 TDI (you basically need it when you're stuck with an automatic tranny.... like my self :-( ).

Suppose to make around 105Hp and 180lb-ft of torque, helps a lot... But I would love more, and more gears.

Oops I mis-spoke. It was $399 CDN for the Ups chip.
