Can a really loose injector prevent 85 Jetta from starting?

Question

Was putzing around under the hood trying to figure out why my car won't start. All signs point to fuel system. I grab the fuel injector for cylinder #1, and it just comes out, totally loose, just hanging out in the hole. Naturally, it's filthy. But, I was shocked that it wasn't plugged in. Is it conceivable that this is why it won't start? I wouldn't think so, all 4 cylinder are 'separate' entities thermodynamically speaking, aren't they?

Also, I try and try and try, but am unable to pull out any of the other 3 injectors. Got any good hints?

The snap-in o-ring is shot, I guess. Buy new ones for cheap, have injectors cleaned. They are expensive. Make sure shroud is on, else you will have to dig it out of the engine.

Should at least attempt to start with the 3 good ones, should make a horrible vac. leak noise w/o the injectior in. Like a Psss.... cuz the piston is pressurizing the cylinder.

You need an injector puller to do it right, you can get one online if you look. It's got a little lip and two slots that you stick a large screwdriver in and pry the injector out....

delta-H aside, if one cylinder isn't firing and the car is only sputtering, it's a possibility that you MUST consider. ;-)

Piece of wood on cam cover to both protect it and act as a lever for the vice-grips that you grab each injector with. Replace O-rings and voila (hopefully).
