clutch problems... again.

hey got an 86 jetta gl. my clutch pedal takes quite a bit to push down now, and the clutch itself doesnt engage. so i replaced the cable and release bearing and have had no luck. she just sits there in the garage on jackstands. am i right by assuming that my clutch is just shot? it was slipping a little and then the cable just went bad.

So do you mean it does not DISengage? IOWs you can not shift into gear. Possible the arm that pushes the release bearing is cracked, or the release plate pushrod is wearing away possible due to a bad release bearing. These are items that can be changed with the trans in place. It could also be the release plate or disc. Trans needs to be removed for this.

OR maybe you do mean it won't engage: Can you shift gears and when you release the clutch pedal and you go no where? Check the CV joints, but this sounds like you need a new clutch. :-( Since you said it was slipping then you could assume that the clutch needs replacing.
