A2 Jetta Clutch Problem

Hi Im at wits end .I own a 1990 Jetta GL 1.8 SOHC PF AUG type 5 speed tranaxle. I just installed a clutch pressure plate and release bearing in my car and I noted when I connected the cabel to the operater lever that it was to easy to do.When I adjusted the cable I had to take it almost all the way out to almost tighten the cable (note: the cable is a self adjuster type) When i pressed the clutch peldal down it droped right ot the floor .So I figured I did something wrong I ripped it all apart and redid it. I turned out just like the first time.So I bought another clutch set its the spitting image of the origanl . I installed the new one to the same effets as the first. I have had this apart about 10 time now and i still have no pedal. The operater lifts up about 1 inch before the release lever hits the release bearing. The release lever sit up about half a inch above the release bearing when the operater lever is resting on its stop. The cable has alot of slack even when adjusted all the way out. I reinstalled the old parts and its the same as the new. on instillation i bolted the pressure plate to the crank 50 lb torque .I used the corect align ment tool when installing the clutch I made sure the flywheel was sitting right on the dial pins. I installed the release plate and spring .I tried 3 different release bearing in it .I examed the release lever for cracks or missing teeth it looks fine I also examed the teeth on the operater lever it seems fine. It almost seems that the push rod is too short. Any help with this will be greatly APP Im at wits end !!!

Are you sure the cable is not breaking, or the pedal cluster is not broken? How did you adjust the self adjusting cable? How did you remove it when you were installing the clutch? What angle is the lever that the cable attaches to when it first makes an attempt to disengage the clutch? Did you watch the cable operation as someone else steps on the clutch pedal?

Yes the pushrod could be an issue. You can take it out and measure it.

Im Leaning toward the clutch cable. I have no idea how the self ajusting cable works but when I took the transaxel out I forgot to disconnect the cable. The transaxels weight was on the cabel and hanging on it. Maybe I stretched the living daylights out of it.I read some where that the cabel has a spring in it maybe I streched the spring. I dont know Im going to take the cabel off and replace it. When I removed the cabel I wound the top plastic adjuster all the way down .When I reinstalled it I wound it almost all the way out.when the lever first ingages the relese bearing The lever is Level to the the ground so if you look at it its stright across the transaxel its not hitting the bottom stop and the rubber stop is still on the lever. Thanks for Reading this and helping out Dave ! Cheers: Jeff

Problem solved it was all in the clutch cable. The cable being streched caused all my problems. The car now lays tire in all 5 gears :0) VDUBS ROCK : Jeff
