CV JOINT?

Hey guys, quick question, ive researched symptoms of bad cv joints. Well most make that clank clank or bad grinding sound, yet the car still goes. On my case the grinding sound is bad, yet the car does not go anywhere, no matter how much gas i give it. the other day i just happen to push the car and turn the steering wheel to the left and when i tried to give it gas it moved for about 2 minutes and it stopped.

the grinding sounds is coming from the driver side tire

the car is a 1988 vw gti 16v

what do u guys think ? CV joint? inner? outer? ...rack n pinion?

Not sure from your description, but it sounds like it broke. Take a look at both sides, you may be able to see a part disconnected.

CV joints can fall apart and no longer transmit the engergy from the tranny to the wheels. Based on what you describe, I would be taking a close loose at the axles.

Lift and support the car safely so you can get under it, then grab an axle shaft and see if there is any free play in it. 1mm of freeplay isn't much of anything, but more than say 3mm of free play in any given direction is suspect (of device).

I've got the details on replacing half axles on my website:

Hope this helps out.

A completely shot CV joint will prenvent the car from moving. To the transmission it's just like that tire is sitting on ice and the tranny will not put any torque on the other tire so you are stuck. I'd guess that it is probably the outer joint (I've had 5 outer's fail and no inner's failures yet). Easiest way to check it is to put the entire front end up on GOOD SOLID JACK STANDS then start the car and put it in gear. If the shaft on that side is turning but the tire isn't then it is the outer for sure. if the tire is turning the joint might still be bad it just that there is no resitstive force on the tire when it is off the ground. The next step would be to try again with the tires on the ground. NOW BE SMART AND DON"T GET RUN OVER BY YOUR OWN CAR. But you could have a friend start the car and put it in gear with the parking brake on AND the rear wheels chocked AND him ready to stomp on the brakes if it started to move. You could look at the shaft from BEHIND the front wheel to see if it is turning. I bet it is the outer joint just replace the enire half shaft once prove it.

Yes, this is exactly what happened on my mates Mk1 GTi, All the bolts fell out, then the inner cv joint came loose and he got stranded miles away from home.

Seems whoever did his clutch (about 8 months prior) didnt use any loctite or didnt do em up tight enough.

On another note, have you any idea where you can actually buy these? Multi-splines theyre called, and they are almost impossible to come by in the UK.
