ENGINE LIGHT?POWER LOSS!!

Ok, heres the deal. I've always loved VW, and finaly got one that was cheap and what i wanted. It's a 94 2.0 auto. The motor only has 69000 kilometers on it. The problem w/ this car is that the engine light comes on SOMETIMES and when it does, there is major power loss and a verry boggy sound. It seems to come on about 15-20 minutes into reg. city driving. There is no VW dealer in my town, so i was wondering if anyone has any idea what could be happening. When the light isn't on, the car runs great!! It's verry frustrating being that i've only had the car for a week or so. Im thinkin' O2 sensor, MAF sensor or catalyictic converter. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

That engine light could be on for close to 100 engine faults... so with out knowing the fault code it's only a guess. How many parts do you wish to guess at? Get it scanned!

Or buy a scanner and scan it yourself! ross-tech.com sells the good vag-com tool. If you plan on keeping it, or another VW/Audi, then it will pay for itself! ;-) There is a list of others with the vag-com tool on the internet. You can contact a person hopefully close to you! I see you are registering kilometers so you are probably not in the USA.

Agreed. Don't guess. The fault code will point you in the right direction. Any money saved not scanning it will be spent, several times over, throwing random parts at the car.

It could be many things, but most cars have a computers that keeps track of problems and stores information about what may be wrong. The first step is to have the computer scanned to see if there are any error codes. Some autopart stores will do this for free; try Autozone.

It could cause more expensive repairs if you don't do something now. Many times it is nothing more than a loose gas cap, other times you might be destroying your catalytic converter or something else.

It is really foolish to ignore it.
