Exhaust Ideas...

Hey Everyone,

The time is approaching to replace the exhaust system on my Jetta, and I have priced out the OEM stainless system, and it comes in at $360 Canadian. I have heard people speak of the TT system, and I was wondering, which system would I go with for my Jetta, they seem to have a ton of choices!

Thanks,

Peter

If you get a TT, *do* get the optional center resonator. I have it and I wouldn't want my system any louder. It's tolerable now and I can't imagine owning a daily driver with the system droning on and on any louder than it already is. I haven't heard my car much from the outside while driving simply because I'm the only driver most of the time, but from inside it's pretty noisy. It's a good quality noise, but it's noise nonetheless and sometimes gets tiresome on long drives. I'm using the Borla muffler which I've heard is nicer sounding than the others.

As for all of their options, stainless is a waste of money if you're in a good climate like me, but if you're in the snow/salt, then do get stainless.

99% of TT exhaust owners will reconmend it to others. I have systems on my A2 (digifant) and A3 Jettas. As for models for your car, I believe it the one with the smaller cat size. As for mufflers Borla is the only choice for SS systems. It has a little less power than the Flowmaster though, but it sounds great with one ressonator or two.

I can hear the cars rusting in winter time here.

Maybe that's 99% of TT _buyers_ ;-) When I bought my Corrado G60 the P.O. had a 2.25" TT "aluminized" system on it with a Flowmaster muffler. A stock G60 has a big suitcase-style muffler under the rear seat area and another muffler in back. The TT system replaced the suitcase with a small glasspack-style muffler and the Flowmaster in back. It was pretty loud to my tastes, though part of that might have been due to the age of the system (probably 3 years old when I first heard it). Soon the seams on the Flowmaster started to buckle from rust and I knew I was going to have to replace it. I wanted the new system to last and here in the north that means SS is the only way to go. I also wanted quiet, but not at the expense of increased back pressure. I finally settled on a Jetex 2.5" cat-back system from New Dimensions. It has a round resonator about 20" long behind the cat, a "turbo" style muffler in the suitcase muffler location, and a very substantial oval muffler at the rear. The rear muffler alone was nearly twice the size of the TT Flowmaster. All three are essentially straight through mufflers, with SS wool packing. The result is nice and quiet, with the most prominent note being at a low frequency, with no higher pitched blatt when I open the throttle. I like that, I don't want people three blocks away to know when I floor it. And with the increased diameter I'm pretty sure that I have even less back pressure now than with the TT.

That said, the best choice really is down to one's taste. For short drives a louder exhaust is kind of fun, but it gets old fast on a long trip. That constant growl is just too much for me. With the Jetex the highway sound is tamed down to a loud purr, and that suits me fine. The only bad thing I can say about the Jetex is the clamps that came in the kit are not SS, so I think I will replace those soon. Oh, and the hangers were not the heavy-duty kind with the embedded chain, but I have some of those in hand now so if there is any sagging I'll just swap them in.
