I was on my way back to Florida from NY and warmed my Volkswagon Fox up. I pumped up my tires w/o the engine running and when I went to start it it would not run, I pulled the plugs and they were fowled up. Even after cleaning them up (Real New Plugs) I still get spitting and sputtering when I go to take off. I took the valve cover off to ck the valves cause they were tapping exsessively and discoverd my timing belt had a ridge in the middle from the Idler pulley to the timing belt being seized up. I belive the vehicle has been running this way for some time and didn't realy feel that is the only problem I'm having. Please help I need to get back Home. JJ

You don't want to ruin your engine by allowing it to get completely out of time. That would cost you a bundle. Sounds like you have the know-how, but unless you also have the necessary tools, take your car to a good shop and get your timing belt replaced and your engine retimed. At the same time, have the shop do a diagnostic to see if there are any other serious problems. This will cost you, but at least it will be a lot less than an engine replacement.
