Passat smell of burning lubricant

Jan 08, 2005 5 Replies

every now and then in my 2000 Passat, a foul smell of burning lubricant comes in through the heater vents, indicating (we surmise) perhaps an infrequent dripping from a leaking pipe onto something very hot (e.g.manifold).... just wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem .... might save some time searching.... thanks JL

Yep, 2.8l V6- valve cover & tensioner gaskets. Also could happen on the

1.8t.

been out of circulation for a few days, just got your reply, thanks...seems the smell only comes when I go quite slowly... plus the computer tells me my mileage is about 4mpg less on average also... not sure whether these are are connected..... J
