What is the small (5" x 2" x 4") rectangular reservoir below and to the left of the battery?? Could it be the power steering res??

what color is it? VW normally has green power steering fluid 'boxes'. Sebastian
Thanks! This one is kind of a decayed beige color--turns out it is in fact the PS res and it IS cracked :( df
