I had a 96 Sharan VR6 since January. One of the first things i noticed was, the power of the engine was wasted by revving way too high in 5th around
70mph, as if ready for a 6th gear. I took a closer look and found the gearing for 5th somewhat strange. Plotted it here:

The solid lines are for petrol models and the dashed line for 5th is the only difference, which went into the diesels. I am thinking to replace the gears on the 5th to match that of the diesel. With all of the power of the VR6, it seems to make much more sense. It'll rev 2950 at 70 instead of 3500. Why did VW build them with such high ratio in the first place?
