Why would I want to pay a premium for the silicone coolant hoses made by Samco, SFS Performance, etc.? Are they really worth the extra money in terms of longevity? I'd be interested in hearing the group's opinions and experiences with these types of hoses. Thanks.

What car's it for? I used Samco hoses when I transplanted a 1.8T engine into my Corrado as they were easily obtainable in the sizes I required for a custom installation. As a direct replacement for stock parts then I wouldn't bother unless you want your hoses in pretty colours. My other car has hoses 10+ years old and I've never had a problem with a stock hose failing.
Same here...my GTI went about 12 years with nearly all stock hoses before I just had them all replaced "just in case". In that time only one stock hose had developed a small bulge in it. Stock VW hoses are great quality.
The small cloth -covered hoses VW uses for small vacuum lines should be replaced, as they become brittle after 5 years or so. Any quality rubber or silicone hose is fine for this. I agree with the other response, I did not see any degradation in coolant hoses in my last VW after 10 years.
my scirocco is nearly 18, and has only had 1 coolant hose replaced
