My 89 Jetta started making this weird squeaking noise from the dash and it looks/sounds like its coming from the speedometer. At speeds under 20mph the needle flutters and the sound is loudest - above 20mph it gets a tad quieter and the fluttering stops. I'm guessing its the the cable. I figure it might be due to the cold snap (17F last night). I am wondering if its OK to spray a little Lithium grease or other lubricant onto the cable to try and prolong it until the warmer spring or if this is a sign of a failing cable.
Any suggestions ?
