Switch out Auto for Stick in 2002 Jetta 1.8t?

I have a 2002 Jetta 1.8T with the triptronic transmission. I like the car except I hate how the transmission is matched with to the engine. It has a soft, low power range from 1300 to 1800 RPM that is like mush. It also gets easily confused when switching fast to slow and back to fast speed (45 mph in rush hour) It is hard to gauge, shifts rough, and is especially scary when you pull out to go around someone and there is NO power. You have to really give it allot of gas to force the Turbo to kick in.

Has anyone every switched out a triptronic for a manual? I am serious about this. I honestly think I would like it better and would be able to control it while driving if I was doing the shifting.

No, the manual shift does not do what you tell it to. If you want to shift and it is not ready it won't do it.

Yes it can be done easily by just trading the car in on another! Would be cheaper too...

Yea! I am not alone. Mine keeps 3rd too long and roughly shifts to 4rth and then switches to 5th too early and has too little power when turning corners. I will also have a stick next time.

I have had the normal problems with the window clip breaking and the window dropping down into the door plus the coils failing but haven't had other problems.

This is my first and last VW. I bought foreign this time because I thought is would make a differnce. Hmmm.

Yes I think the program could be different but I think it has to do a lot with EPA/Federal standards. My Mom's 2.0 94 Jetta and my 99 GLX Passat all shift the same way especially going into top gear too soon. Tip- I have learned if you push the gas pedal quicker it will downshift a lot sooner. You don't have to go to the floor but just move your foot faster. Give it a try!
