V.W.88 startermotor wiring

I would like to find out about the 88 Fox startermotor 1 wire fat goes to battery one wire to starterswitch 1 wire to the coldstartvalve?? Never seen that before in starters wiring could somebody explain the function and the why of this setup?? Thanks Moony.

Sounds like you have CIS-e (= KE-Jetronic) fuel injection. On newer injection systems the ECU opens and closes each fuel injector as needed, and can thus easily make the mixture as rich or lean as needed both during starting and running. With CIS-e the fuel injectors are open all the time (CIS = Continuous Injection System). The mixture is controlled by carefully adjusting the fuel pressure according to air-flow, O2 sensor input etc. Quite a fascinating setup with a mechanical air flow meter acting on a mechanical fuel pressure regulator, with the addition of an electronic fuel pressure regulator as well.

During cranking with a cold engine, the mixture has to be *very* rich for a few seconds for easy start. Since the injector timing can't be adjusted (the injectors are open all the time) there needs to be some other way to get the required cold-start enrichment. That is what the cold start valve is for. It is simply an additional fuel injector mounted on the intake manifold. The cold start valve, unlike the regular fuel injectors, is turned on and off with an electrical signal. For the cold start valve to be open, the starter must be cranking (providing battery voltage, thus the connection to the starter) and the thermo-time-switch must be "on", providing a ground path.

The thermo-time-switch is heated both by engine coolant and a built-in heating element. The colder it is, the longer it will stay on. At -20°C it stays on for about 7.5 seconds.
