vw diesel golf

My ex wife just put unleaded gasoline in my VW Golf diesel and drove it 15 miles. The tank has about 50/50 gas and diesel. It sat for four days and then I started it and noticed it was smoking and idled rough. I drove it 5 miles and it ran fine. It did not overheat but when I stopped it at a store it would not start again. What kind of damage do you think could have occurred. Others must have had this happen to them. I love this car.

What year is your golf diesel? If it's an older one like late 80's, they can handle like 20% gas. You probably screwed up your injector pump. Too bad you didn't fill it ASAP with diesel once you noticed the problem.

It's a 2002 Golf. I didn't realize what had happened until the car wouldn't start and I had some time to think about who had used it last. What kills me is that she has a Ford diesel truck and is in the habit of always buying diesel. I don't know what would make her put gas in it. If it's only the injector pump I would feel lucky. When I think back I should have recognized the smell of the exhaust as that of unleaded gas.

They are pretty expensive new so I would probably get it rebuilt.

Well I would start by suggesting that you not try to run the engine until you have flushed out that mix.

I would hold off any repairs until you have 100 Diesel back in there. Then I would see what happens when you do drive it. There are lots of possibilities some of which are not likely to show up for a long time, if ever.

You may just be lucky. You may find you need new injectors and or an injector pump etc. now or in the future.

I sense some latent negativity from a previous relationship. Someone might need to get some counseling. The Golf is fine. It cost $96 to get all the fuel drained out of the system and tank and put $8 back in. I talked to a couple of mechanics who had seen it before and they told me that probably no damage would be done. If it had been straight gas this wouldn't be true, but with 50/50 diesel the car wont run but is still lubricated. The engine had difficulty in turning over and the mechanic told me that there was too much liquid entering the cylinders causing the compression to rise and approaching the point where there would be a hydraulic lock on the engine (as can occur with a blown head gasket). I thought that was interesting My ex appologised profusely and says she'd pay whatever it cost to fix it. She's had a lot on her mind lately and just did something stupid. I've been there myself.

SOOOO Either don't lend out that Diesel or fill it up before lending it out and lock that fuel cap! 8^)

I had a friend put 1-2 gallons of regular in her 1984 Rabbit Diesel back in

1988. It was winter time, the tank was almost empty and she was going to drive it to the diesel fuel station and fill it up with diesel. It stalled out on her and I read her the riot act while I towed it back, flushed out her lines and diluting that gas with diesel. No harm done but one of my auto shop instructors indicated that if it was one of the american diesels = damage would have occured.

Your car is fine after the drain and fill, but you should also replace the filter if it wasn't done. Believe it or not, this happens EVERYDAY, sometimes to people that have owned their diesel for years, minds do wander especially if you own a gas and a diesel.

Oddly, how I have avoided this so far is I only use the truck pumps in the back of the stations I go to. They tend not to have gasoline around back where the truckers are. My worry is one day I'll try to squirt diesel into my gas car.
