Planning for Service Item Replacement - 02 Explorer

Greetings!!

Have an '02 Explorer that is just approaching the end of the 36k factory warranty. Has been very reliable so far, and I am not concerned at all about "big" repairs off in the future (PremiumCare ESP to 100k). But...

I would expect that some "wear items" will be necessary and I'd like to get some idea about when things may need to be replaced. A couple of factors ... it's a V-6 Limited. We do no off road driving at all. We drive very mildly ... no panic stops (unless necessary, of course!!), no road racing, no more than 5 MPH over the speed limit on the freeway, no towing, and a mix of about 75% in town 25% highway miles. In other words ... boring.

Since I have grown older with the Explorer (together now for almost 3 years), it frankly seems to ride & drive & brake just about like it did when brand new. There appears to be a little wear on the factory Goodyear tires, and I have been reading the thread recommending new tires closely. I think there are probably at least 10k left on the tires, although I may replace them earlier just to feel better in the ever present Washington State rain ... and very occasional trips into a snow covered area this winter!!

Given all of this, I am wondering what kind of service life I can expect for other items ... brake pads, rotors, shocks, hoses and belts, etc.?

Anything else I should be on the lookout for that ESP will not cover?

Thanks in advance.

Ken

May want to change the tranny fluid. Like our '02, there's no dipstick to check the color of the fluid, let alone the fluid level. Only problem I had was the front pinion seal was leaking a year ago, and had it replaced. Even my old '98 ft pinion sealed leaked and was replaced under warranty. wth

I had the Ford dealer do a brake inspection and tire rotation when it was in for the rear end and driveshaft replacement. They put on new front pads and turned the front rotors. Rears were fine. This all at 36,000 miles. I replaced the air filter, fuel filter, and did the remainder of the 36K maintenance myself. Other than the Minnesota DOT induced rust on the frame, ( 90% of which seems to be on the welds by the way), its okay. Makes me wonder why Ford doesn't coat the frame with something heavier. Some vehicle I was crawling under had a heavy wax/tar substance, the Explorer seems to have something more like plain old paint.
