110v8 - drumming/vibration

My 110 (1984 V8) has recently started drumming/vibration from 40mph upwards, becoming vibration through the steering wheel at 50mph and noisier/worse as speed increases. Easing the throttle or coasting stops it, and it is more pronounced the harder I accelerate - dissapears when decelerating. It seems to be coming from the front n/s. Any thoughts for the non-mechanic that I am?

Best guess is a worn universal or loose bolts on the front drive shaft. If this is the case it needs urgent attention, as the failure of a drive shaft at speed is not something you want to see. Other possibilities are a failing CV joint or wheel bearing, which are not as dire. It could also be something relatively inoccuous such as a loose engine mounting, or one that has gone soft and allows the engine or exhaust to touch the body in some conditions. JD

That may be a US/UK ambiguity.

Either way, the shaft between gearbox and axle can do a lot of damage if it comes adrift and flails about. From the original post, I'm inclined more to the CV joint than anything else. It sounded to be coming from the front n/s, and from a combination of speed and load.

That isn't enough to rule out other items, but the propshaft is easy to check. And it's worth a check.

Thanks David,

I've visually checked the front UJ and propshaft bolts - all looks secure. I've also noticed a "clank" or "twang" (for want of a better descriptive word!) from the front n/s when taking up drive from stationary after changing direction (forwards/reverse) and when mounting a kerb etc, just for more info...

Reasonable LR servicing in the Portsmouth area seems to be thin on the ground if you discount the main agent - anyone know of a LR friendly garage in the area?

If my landrover specialist is anyone to go by, it isn't a CV joint, or anything on the n/s! He found that the top of the o/s shock absorber isn't attached to anything, and the o/s swivel bearing is shot (excess movement of the o/s wheel vertically in and out). Also, the panhard bush I did last year is worn already, it needs a new drop arm joint, both panhard bushes, a draglink end and a railko bush for the swivel. Along with axle gaskets etc he reckons £200 labour and around £100 in parts (genuine). Does all this seem reasonable?

doesn't sound silly, there's quite a bit of fiddlin' to do the swivel bushes, and the OS shock thing might require a turret, so several parts required. Personally, I'd not bother with genuine parts, but that's just me.

£200 labour is down to whether you have the time/ability/inclination to do the work yerself. If not, £200 doesn't sound silly, anyway, at the rates you get these days.
