2.25 diesel injector

Dear All,

I need some help adjusting the springload on a diesel injector.. After failing an emmisions test on my S3, I pulled the injectors for cleaning (I will clean them using an ultrasonic bath). So the question is, is there a standard method for adjusting the springload (opening pressure) without the need of the official testing gear.. Also, if i want to retard the timing, do I need to rotate the pump ccw or cw (I think its ccw but I'm not sure) Any help would be very helpful :-)

Kind regards, Martin.

Doesn't the pump rotate the same way as a dizzy on a 2.25? In which case cc/w to retard, as the dizzy rotates cc/w.

The only thing I could find in the haynes (bol) manual, was the firing order for the petrol version being 1-3-4-2, If i check the connections on the dieselpump it can be the same if the pump is rotating ccw.... But again, I'm not sure if the firing order is the same as a petrol version..

The firing order is the same. Same crank etc.

Simon, OK, thanks :-) So that is one problem down, still one to go....

Same block, IIRC. The 2.25 was designed as a deisel, and then as a petrol. Different head, and an injector instead of a dizzy, but basically the same engine.

if it's smoking, the normal trick is to advance the timing. The cab types do this on old motors to get 'em through the test...

has the green book forthe Series III - all versions. I'm not sure that you can do much without acalibrated pump to test nozzle opening pressure and dribble. You may just dobetter to get them professionally tested.

No, cant be done. Try running it in for the test on 50% paraffin, after cleaning injectors etc.

If that is white smoke then yes, if it is black smoke (like on mine) timing should be later...

I think I'll end up that way.. :-) Now I have to find someone with an injector tester.. The job itself aint rocketsience, so what I really was hoping for if someone could tell from experience how many rotations on the springloadscrew is generally about the right setting. I aint gonna race the thing, so if it is not 100% perfect I really don't mind :-)

Thanks anyway, Martin..

generally, assuming the air cleaner is OK, I'd have thought black smoke was over-fuelling, which you should be able to adjust.

So, after disassembling the other 3 injectors, I know the springload is about 1.5 turns (slightly less) on the adjuster screw. However, the reason for failing the emmisions-test became clear when I unscrewed the last injector. The bloody thing was broken !!!!, for a picture see

matter how much cleaning stuf i would have put in the tank, it never could resolve this :-)So, now I am on the lookout for a new injector..... Kind regards, Martin.
