Heater Matrix - V8

When connecting the water pipes from the engine to the heater matrix, will the water flow into the top of the matrix and then back out the bottom pipe? Also, on a 1990 3.9V8, should the water flow back from the heater through the metal pipe over the engine head with the filler tower on? Thanks.
