New lights for Grumble

Whilst at Billing I got some Durite LED indicators and 'stop&tail' lights. Long story, but I've been thinking of getting some for a while as you'd be surprised at just how many clueless prats seem to want to slipstream 4 tonne of 101 ambi - especially at night...

Anyway, as the indicator LEDs have no real power they confuse the indicator relay into thinking the bulb is blown - therefore a load resistor is needed - or wire the LEDs in with another bulb (same effect). Without load, the indicator relay simply blinks ten to the dozen to inform you that a bulb is possibly blown.

A work-around is to use a phase generator - which is like an 'electronic flasher relay' - however these are not 'street legal' in the UK as they give no indication ('scuse pun) if you have a blown bulb.

I thought it interesting that in the high-tech chip controlled world we live in - it is still necessary to have a 50 year old design relay in order to pass the MOT and be street legal! :-)

Regards

Martyn

The law on vehicle lighting specifies viewing angles for different lamps. seen 'em on buses in brum, mind, and they seem pretty good - traffic lights too in places, although they use a LOT of LEDs, and are mostly only for viewing in one direction.

The Durite are similar, but slightly larger, more LEDs (and a little bit more expensive).

The ones I got are the type designed for coaches and the like.

The overall spread and angle is actually far, far better than the standard 101 lights.

I'll pop a few pics up later, when I've only done one side, to demonstrate this.

I take your point, but 101s are hardy typical...

you could always fit a fibre optic repeater to indicate (pun intended) activation of the leds

Yeah, the rest of it's a pile of crap though.

"A camera-operated lane departure warning system helps keep the driver alert by emitting a soft audible sound signal if the vehicle unintentionally drifts outside of the lane. Additional cameras mounted within the bed help the driver monitor truck-to-trailer coupling, as well as reversing."

In other words - I'm a stupid american who can't drive between two simple white lines without making a bollocks of it.

The ones on the buses in the wet mudlands appear to be a large-ish array of LEDs under a red or amber cover, rather than an actual bulb replacement. This should allow of spreading 'em at different angles, which would solve some of the narrow beam problems. You can get wide angle LEDs, but they're not so bright.

Yeah, that's what I got - replacement lights, not bulbs. The Durites have a complete housing and are slightly larger than the standard 101 rear light. I measured them three times before buying them, just to make sure, then wen't to get some heavy duty light guards :-)

All the new busses in Leicester have them as do the lights they have just installed down the road.

Don't let her hear you call her that.

I'm sure Martyn's wife is very nice. Patience of a saint, too.

Max had an accident on Monday and has cost me a lot of angst (and bloody money come to think about it) this week. Only minor, but involved surgery, a day off work for me, and a fair amount of other associated stress. I therefore exclude him, at present, from the 'fun' things in the office. He's not at all arsed, laying there like lord muck - so he can sod off...

Back in a mo, he wants to go for a walk...

I'm in charge, mind...
