P38 already on the slippery slope

Sat behind a P38 at the traffic lights this morning, P reg.

Rear tailgate along the lower edge was well and truely on it's was to being perforated. Lots and lots of bubbles I wouln't liked to have sponged vigorously overit while washing or that would have made it a right pigs ear.

Sign I'm getting older... even the young Landies are going rusty.

They do go around there, but you don't see too many in that bad shape Lee. I like the P38, it's just too expensive to repair. Odd really, the RRC goes on the top tailgate & the P38 goes on the bottom!!

I'm defffo gonna buy a RRC LSE if I can find one that is reasonable. P38's, whilst mega cheapo for what you get, are stupid money to fix for the slightest bits!

I reckon ££2-2.5k will buy a car that once cost £40k!!! I reckon around £500 worth of sorting & it will be a cracker! Don't want a diesel in a Rangie now.

I like the simile with your job btw!

I reckon as the price comes down what will cause the demise of the older P38s will be the lack of and necessity for diagnostic software the diehard DIY spannerist is not going to pay dealers to reset the pooter everytime a wire falls off - a not unknown situation in LR products Derek ( I will not but that 110 V8 project till I get the boat finished honest)

There's a lot of vehicles that are showing the amazing rust production abilities of the disinfectant(s?) used during the Foot and Mouth outbreak.

Discovery's seem to be suffering particularly badly at body crossmember (not the chassis one) of the rear of the floor (where there is little "rinsing" from road spray) - this is over and above the "normal" floor rust.

Still, the overseas 4x4's affected by the disinfectant are just being binned as they are not worth fixing - so it could be worse.

The disinfectant in question is Citric Acid - a fairly mild acid, but still going to cause major galvanic rot on something like a Disco where you've got Ally onto various forms of steel.

They also used phosphoric acid. I still have around four gallons of concentrate in the shed. FWIW when I washed the car the other week, I used an alloy wheel cleaner that was particularly effective, Wurth was its brand name, and guess what it was made of? Yes you've got it, dilute phosphoric acid. How dilute it is, I haven't a guess but when the Wurth runs out I reckon I will have enough wheel cleaner to last me and my daughter out even if we live to a good old age.

Dont wanna disillusion you Nige, but the RRC goes on the bottom tailgate too, all along the bottom edge!
