I have an E34 BMW 525 AUTO and have just started to have a couple of problems with the gearbox. Well to start with the head gasket went, when that was repaired, the car would bounce up and down when you came to a dead stop with it in gear, take it out of gear and all is fine. So we changed the gearbox fliud. What I now have is the appearance of a slippy clutch, sometime when you depress the excelerator the clutch slips.

Does this mean the gearbox is knackered?

Any help / thoughts would be greatly recieved!

Something doesn't sound right. When you changed the gearbox oil, did you check the level with the engine running? On Automatic boxes, you should let the car idle, and then check the level using the dipstick. A low oil level could give the appearance of a slipping clutch, as there won't be enough oil in the torque convertor to transmit drive. If the level is correct, I would guess that's there's a problem with the torque convertor, which is normally a job for a auto. transmission specialist.

Does your car have a dipstick for the gearbox, or drain and fill bungs?

I assume you used ATF to fill it with?

Like Moray said, auto box levels are usually done with engine running. It is possible you have not enough oil in it.
