Corsa 1.5td noisy engine update

Hi there

After searching for a 1.5td engine for a month it turned out that someone had dropped a 1.7td engine in! Decided to replcace only the cylinder head after buying a nova engine and mechanic saying it wouldn't fit without a huge labour charge.

After removing the head the mechanic found a crack on the bottom between the valves. Have replaced the cylinder head from Allvox which came as bare head so mechanic stipped old injectors off old one etc. Now we have another problem.....

The mechanic has got to the 'dry run' stage and the car runs for 3 secs then cuts out. Won't start for 10 mins after then does exactly the same. The mechanic has not got the alternator's pulley on, the air filter is also off, the battery is flat and he is using one of those 'out of vehicle batteries' the AA use. He thinks it is possible there is a problem with the turbo.

Is it possible that these cars need the alternator running to open the fuel shutoff valve? Indeed, can they run without the alternator and a flat battery but that battery attached to one of those batteries described above? The mechanic attached the leads from his battery to the

  • and - not to the + and engine hoist as I've seen recommended elsewhere.

It is of course possible that the wiring is botched from conversion from

1.5td engine to 1.7td!

Thanks to any replies

You need a new mechanic, the turbo doesn't do anything at idle

That won't make any difference but it would make more sense to charge the vehicle battery & use that.

Check the fuel delivery pressure from the lift pump, that can cause brief running then death.

Sack your mechanic.

Thanks guys

Had a search about lift pumps and found this on a US website answering a Chevy with same problem:

You likely have either a bad electric fuel lift pump or oil pressure switch. The oil pressure switch contains a dual element; one of which power the lift pump when oil pressure is developed.

Looking at the wiring diagram the Isuzu engined Corsa also has a oil switch that is linked to the fuel! The mechanic did say that the oil pressure light wasn't working so it looks like I'm onto a winner. Thanks again.

Sorry to p**s on your fire, but neither of the above statements are true. The Corsa has neither a fuel lift pump in the tank, or a dual-function oil pressure switch.

It sounds as though there is air in the injection pump which needs to be bled through, or the pump timing is set incorrectly.
