Mondeo 1.8 TD (97) - Engine starts to rev high

Greetings,

I'm requesting a second opinion or two in this ng if you don't mind. My Mondeo has an issue with the revs going up to about 1500rpm at random intervals and blipping the accelerator is not able to turn it off. However, revving the engine to about 4000 rpm and above will eventually get the engine ticking over at a normal rate before it happens again. A friend who is quite knowledgeable with cars has looked at it and checked the accelerator cable to see if that's sticking and he said it's in the stop position when it revs up again and he has also tested it with reverse gear cable disconnected off the solenoid in case it was associated with that and the engine still revs high randomly.

My friend reckons it could be the fuel injection pump that's on the blink and I should get a diagnostic carried out on it with a view to arranging a quote for having it repaired. He is 99.99% certain it's the fuel injector pump. He's also educated me at the cost of replacement/repair. The prices are quite scary. I've been told not to have the car serviced until I know what the issue is with the engine revving up randomly.

Surely the problem may be associated with something easier and less costly to fix??

Thanks for your time,

JJ

No. The pump needs to be checked. It's not a petrol engine where such a thing can happen because of an air leak.

it may be burning oil leaking from the turbo, when it builds up high enough it gets picked up (this is just a theory, but I would imagine you would get blue smoke)

check the spring in the adjuster on the throttle cable

I've just cured this with my 1997 2.0l petrol. IF the problemis the same... I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor with one from a breakers. BUT, before you replace it, try just removing the connector plug and replacing it, and removing the connector plug and replacing itremoving the connector plug and replacing itremoving the connector plug and replacing itremoving the connector plug and replacing it... until you are happy that there is a good, uncorroded connection there.

HTH.

I took the car yesterday to a diesel specialist and he had it repaired by

11.30 yesterday morning. On the receipt that he gave me he has written *Removed pump top - fitted new throttler shaft and seal kit*

Total cost incl vat - £90

Cheers,

JJ
