Mondeo vibration under engine load

Mondeo Mk3, April 2003, 2.0 petrol, Ghia X, Manual, 110k miles.

Car shakes (sometimes quite baddly) when engine is under any load. Perfectly smooth when coasting out of gear or when cruising at a steady speed. It shakes as soon as the slightest bit of throttle is applied and gets worse the harder I accelerate. It feels worse in 3rd, 4th or 5th. Whole front of car shakes with some feed back through steering. Not sure if its related but it seems slightly worse in wet weather or am I imagining it ? Also not totally sure but it seems more wheel speed related than engine speed. All tyres are very good with 6mm + of tread (Michelin). All the wheels were re-balanced last week end but this made no differance. Swapped all 4 wheels in turn with a wheel from another car (to check for a bent wheel) but this didn't prove anything. I've not had the car long so don't know the history but it has had full main dealer servicing ! Any thoughts anyone as I am fast running out of ideas. Any checks I should be doing to narrow it down a bit ? Thanks Paul

*Could* be the Dual Mass Flywheel, if it's fitted to this model.

There've been quite a few reported, but mostly on the diesels.

I would have said it was the driveshaft or CV Joint as a worn DMF wouldn't be felt through the steering

Driveshaft. Had this on my old Mk.II Mondy. I would look at outer CV joint - either side. Especially if the problem is worse under load and can be felt through the steering.

I'd agree with that. Happened on my Montego, though it turned out to be the inner joints.

You were right. It was the driveshaft bearing. Thanks for the help, saved me loads of time. Paul
