Dodge Avenger

Was passing a Dodge / Chrysler dealer today and decided to pop in for a look around.

Was initially going in to look at the Sebring, but spotted the Avenger on the other side of the showroom.

Dark-ish metallic red with quite chunky alloys.

Shamefully, I thought it looked pretty damned good, so had a proper look.

Interior is loaded with kit, including climate control, power seats and leather. They also have a really nice custom stereo in the top spec. models.

Engine is a VAG 2.0TDI-140.

Not driven it yet - but the salesman invited me back for a 'demo'. I don't want to waste his time as yet until I know exactly when I can place a new car order - current prediction is for delivery around April with around an 8 week lead time.

However, could I live with the cheap and tacky interior?

Not that it counts for anything I will laugh at you and all the reasons you can come up with for a very long time if you end up with something American.

Well it would be perhaps a little hypocritical Steve heh. The interior will be dross, the build will be s**te, and the handling will be crap. Tim owned a Neon - IIRC it was not a favourite of his heh.

When we were on holiday in Florida, we enjoyed looking pitifully at the poor people driving Avengers from the splendour of our Charger. I mean come on, FWD FFS....... And there isn't even a Hemi option.

I recommend a Chevy Silverado if you must go American. With a 350 small block.

On LPG of course....

Yes, 'cos they're definitely going to be on the Leaseplan list....

Supposed to be pretty bad, even the VW engine not really being up to scratch if I remember right. Basically the single redeeming feature of the car is the styling, so - as an Alfa nut - I would have thought it would be right up your street... :)

Heh.

There are 3 redeeming features:

  1. Styling
  2. Spec. sheet
  3. Price

I'll have to drive one.

Was the dash soft to the touch?

On the other hand it would be an improvement over the Passat in these respects, whilst retaining the s**te engine.

Not all bad then.

I guess they had to wait until the Chrysler Avenger had faded from the collective unconscious before reusing the name...

I dare someone to put the old blue pentangle Chrysler badge on the front of one.

If I get one, I promise that I will.

My dad had an Avenger. A GLS, with twin-choke carb, quad headlamps and black vinyl roof. It rocked.

As did we. Ours was a white 1500 with the black vinyl roof and the four headlamps, which of course makes it a series one.

TTS 853M - I'm sure it has long since been crushed.

Tell me it had yellow paint with black graphics and hockey stick rear lights.

No, it was white, with the black roof and hockey stick rear lights.

Close enough. For their time they were a bloody good car.

They were - very nicely trimmed interior and more modern / radical looks than the rest of the mainstream competition.

The 1600 GLS my dad had was quite a fast car for it's day - 82bhp-ish and 0-60 in just over 11 seconds.

Much better than the MkIII Cortina it replaced.

ISTR it was a P plate, and was replaced in late '79 by a MkI Accord.

Don't they have 4 linked rear sus as standard?
