Daytime Running lights

I am now into a 2000 Aero. The previous owner had disabled the running lights by removing the fuse. (A fact noted in the owner's manual) On replacing the fuse, I get amber lights at the front and red lights at the rear. I thought daytime running lights were "HEADLIGHTS ON" (possibly at a lower voltage). Cansomeone inform me as to what they should be?

It should be headlights on all the time. However, he may also have had the computer reprogrammed by a dealer. You'll need to have the dealer change the program.

On a Saab, DRL's are the same as running with the headlights on all the time. If you turn on the parking lights then you will have a low glow in the headlights but it's not quite DRL level as you find in other cars.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With fuse number 35 removed, there are no lights on at all unless the switch is in the park or the driving light position. With this fuse replaced, as the owner's manual suggests to get DRLs, then amber lights show at the front and red at the rear (like parking lights) nothing appears to change when the switch is moved to the Parking Light position and the lights stay on when in the Driving Light osition.

IMHO, it is no great safety feature to drive with Parking Lights on.

Could anyone comment further? I would be very grateful.

At one time, in some U.S. states, it was illegal to drive a vehicle on the road with the parking lights on. Parking lights are for parking, headlights are for driving.

I noticed while living in an area with frequent fog that the parking lights were of no value in the fog. You usually saw an indication of the bulk of the vehicle before you could see the feeble parking lights.

I think you mean, #15, but I'd have to check, it's been a while, it could be #20 or #25 :-)

I'm not sure I understand your wording above in terms of whether you are referring to the manual's description or your own operation.

Here's the stock operation in the USA:

Car running: - parking (ft & rr) and headlights are on at all times - headlight switch in parking light postion: same as above - headlight switch in headlight position: same as above

Car off: - headlight switch in parking light postion:parking lights with a low wattage bulb in the headlights giving a slight glow. Lights will NOT shut off after an hour. - headlight switch in headlight position: all lights on, the lights will power off after an hour to save the battery.

- - ------------ Many of us light to control our own lights. So, we have the dealer re-program the switch to act "normally". That is:

Re-programmed car running: - lights are normally off - headlight switch in parking light portion: parking lights only with low glow bulbs in headlights on. - headlight switch in headlight light portion: all lights on. Re-programmed car off:

- Same as stock car off.

I also had the foglights reprogrammed so that I could turn them on and off independent of the headlight switch or high beam selection.

- - --------------

Based on what you've indicated, I think your car has been reprogrammed. They only way to get the DRL's back is to have the dealer redo the programming. Be sure to specify exactly what you are looking for and let them know how you want the fogs to work too. If you are having other service done, some dealers will throw the labor in, others will charge you for the work.

It's sort of the other way around in most states. At a certain time (usually some specific interval after sunset and before sunrise) you are required to have headlights on. You can drive with your parking, headlight, or other lights on as you wish at other times.

In other words, it's not illegal to drive with parking lights on but it is sometimes illegal not to have your headlights on.
