Job For Over Winter??

Now I've just been having a think about my next project.

900 T16 Wheelbase = 2525mm Front Track = 1420mm Rear Track = 1430mm

Scooby Pretza WRX Wheelbase = 2525mm Front Track = 1485.9mm Rear Track = 1480.8mm

This suddenly looks stunningly easy to do. 'Borrow' The drivetrain from the Scoob and plant it in a 900. Engine would be a 9000 2.3 lump but mounted backwards.

Only tricky bits would be transferring the scoob rear suspension into the

900, getting the 2.3 far enough forwards to get the front diff in line with the front hubs and making an adaptor plate up to mount the 2.3 to the Scoob bell housing. Oh and the radiator might have to go in the back or on the roof (RS200 Intercooler stlyee). I'd probably run a chargecooler ala my current 900 due to space constraints but weld two Lotus units together. I'd also be able to get the 2.3 lump a lot lower down in the bay (dry sump it?) and so get the centre of gravity down a bit, which might help reduce the effect of having the engine further out over the front wheels. Oh and I'd need to be able to find a set of wheels that were available in 4stud and 5stud as it would be 5stud on the back and 4stud on the front LOL

I'll have to get a Pretza up on the lift and do some measuring.

So who's up for some 2.3, AWD, Classic 900 Lunacy ;-)

Isn't the main issue going to be the huge tranny + prop shaft tunnel you're going to have to cut out of the 900?

I've often fancied doing a custom build, 600kg or thereabouts, around a scooby setup.

No thats easy. Butchering metal work is my forte ;-) and theres plenty of space.

It'd be a bit more than 600 kilos LOL.

I don't mind hacking cars about, but I must say that splitting a

900 lengthwise would worry me a bit.

Don't mean 900 based - I mean an open custom chassis type arrangement. I've built a couple of those, but never a 4wd one. Lots of 40mm tube, a mig welder and two crates of beer. That's all I need.

My first one was A series engined, and that came in at ~ 400kg.

Well its not completely lengthwise, Boot floor would be left in tact ;-) If your going to do the whole thing in one go as opposed to cutting and welding in sections its easier to weld a frame up and bolt this to the suspension mounting points to make sure everything stays straight. In my dim and distant past I made an Escort Cosworth, from a Mk4 Scrote and a crashed 4X4 cossie (no it wasn't for me LOL)

Great fun init. We did one based on an old Mk1 MR2 scrapheap challenge style. Rather easy as the MR2 has seperate front/rear subframes that carry suspension/engine/steering etc.

From looking around crashed but straight'ish WRX's are about 1500quid. So its do-able for reasonable money.

That is pretty good value. Using most of the wrx suspension, you'd end up with something pretty amazing for say £3k. Hmmmm...

Yep pretty tempting isn't it. Even lobbing some carbon fibre bits and bobs in, caging it up, big brakes (and big wheels to fit them in) re-building the

2.3 lump and tuning to taste, fresh paint, Stack Dash etc. etc. you could end up a 400bhp nutter bastid mobile for well under £10K

Well, my workshop is now ready for action (the floor paint has just dried). I was thinking of buying a microlight, but who wants to fly when you can go 0-60 in 3.5 secs?

Need to find a mint late 3 door shell, a good 2.3lump and a massively panel damaged and bent pretza now. Build it up then transfer all the important bits from F900 over, Brakes, Wheels, Turbo etc.

I'm going to pull the lump out of F900 and measure it up see what needs cutting where, I need to swap gearboxes anyway so its a good excuse to get it done.
