Sunroof problems on a 1999 9-3

Hi,

My sunroof is malfunctioning. It will open the rear edge (ventilation) on its own, but then I have to close it manually with a screwdriver. It will also close if I manually open it all the way with a screwdriver. I'm assuming the switch is ok, because when I try to open it all the way, I hear a clicking noise coming from that area in front of the sunroof. My guess is some issue with the drive mechanism ( gears?).

I'd like to try to fix it myself, but I don't know the "safe way" to remove the large plastic panel in front of the sunroof (I'm assuming what I need to get to is under there). I've started prying it off from the side closest to the windshield (just under the rear-view mirror), but it seems to hang half-way.

Any suggestions on removing this plastic panel, or my guess as to a problem with the gears? Any hints would be appreciated. Any more "donations" to my Saab mechanic this year, and I'll be able to claim him as a "dependant" on my taxes....
