It's that time of year again - ice on the windows arg!

Hi, It's so annoying... go out in the morning and get ready to go to work, only to find out that there is a heavy layer of ice on the windshield of the car... either have to sit there scraping the window, or let the car run.. wasting gas.

Has anyone found a way to keep the ice from forming on the window? Does putting a piece of plastic over the window in the evening prevent it? Is there something you can put on the window (like a liquid of some sort) to keep ice from accumulating in the mornings?

Have you considered a engine block heater? If this is an option, you can run it on a timer so that the engine is warm by the time you get in the car. This may also cause some convection through the heater and may warm the inside of the car/ windows too.

I was re-reading the L-series shop manual and found that there are two electrically operated booster pumps on the heating system. guess that the engine driven pump was not enough for good flow at idle and the plumbing layout was not conducive to convective flow. One pump runs for a few minutes on hot shutdown to circulate the coolant from the engine to the radiator. The other increases the flow through the heater core.
