I Want an STi!!

Hey chaps,

One of my friends recently dragged me into rally racing, where I saw the Subaru Impreza WRX STi perform magnificently last season. Being out in the market for a new car, I am really interested in acquiring one of these but I have heard many people complain about braking and handling overall. I am sure this is more personal than anything and just wanted some input. To those outhere who already have one of these wonderful machines. I ENVY YOU!!

Thanks.

Problem with the braking and handling? You have to be kidding! I can't imagine why anyone would complain about the braking and handling. Unless you can afford an all out exotic, there are very few cars out there that can run with the STi

You must be joking A STi will blow away anything in the snow. The untimate braking, handling challenge as well as traction.

STi wagon? I don't know if you will ever see a wagon. But, who knows.

That's what I had in mind. I'll probably also schedule a test drive to witness this personally. If I were to get one though, are there any upgrades or add-ons that you suggest? I heard that rear brakes were downgraded from the Japanese edition. Thanks again.

Take it from me. If you drive one, you will find a way to get one. The factory brakes are exceptional. I wouldn't change a thing. From 60 mph you will come to a halt in 111 ft. By comparison the Ferrari 360 Modena stops in 110 ft. The Ferrari Enzo will stop you in 109 ft. So for $650,000 you can shave 2 feet off your stopping distance and upgrade to the Enzo. The STi has some of the best brakes in production. That is one of the nicest things about the STi. All the upgrades are already done for you. You get an all-out race machine right off the showroom floor.

Somebody here posted links to a Japanese site with photos (and presumably a write-up) of a Forester STi (which is like a tall Impreza wagon). Which is something that, if I end up getting a Forester 2.5 XT instead of the new Legacy GT turbo, I will likely attempt to duplicate on my own.

Are you sure they're talking about the STi and not the "plain" WRX. The WRX braking system is a bit on the sensitive side and is really one of it's biggest weaknesses. Also the WRX suspension system didn't impress me as much as I would have thought it would in stock form, but add a set of sway bars and things come in line quite nicely. The 2 STi's that I have had the chance to ride in handled very well and were among the faster cars on the track that day. I would not hesitate to buy one.

If there is an STi Forester waiting in the wings why not an STi impreza wagon? I'm not buying a Forester even if they put a 500 ft.lb at 0 rpm engine in it. Shrug.

Thanks man, I really appreciate your taking the time to tell me all this stuff. I am now 99% convinced this is the car for me. I have to learn how to drive stick first though, so that's where that other 1% comes into play. But once I do, I know I am not going to have another boring day in my car again.

No problem! I am really happy with my STi. Learning to drive a stick in an STi is a piece of cake. The thing has so much power and torque that you would have to go out of your way to try and kill it! There is nothing boring about the STi. But, beware, you can get in a lot of trouble in the STi. It has way more than enought power to get out of control if you are not paying attention.

nah. too small. we'll need to seat 7 with room for junk in the back. i wish for something that looks as good as and as functional as the honda odyssey with as much or more power (240hp in the odyssey) and AWD.

I'll second that. From 160 KPH (about 100 MPH) if you hold the brakes until the ABS starts to kick in, it will literally make your head spin. As for handling, the thing is tricky because it handles differently under power than under braking. Once you get used to it, I can't think of too many reasonably-priced cars that can outperform it. It accelerates like a rocket, stops like it is anchored, and turns like it is on rails. Even people who don't like the look of them, drool over them after they have driven them. I test drove it, and bought it the same day.

I second that. From 160KPH (about 100MPH) to zero with max braking, the thing will literally make your head spin. It is tricky to handle if you are not used to it, because it handles differently under power and under braking. But, it does so predictably, so once you get used to it, there are very few cars that will keep up to you.
