Looking for price info on 04 models

I'm also in the market for an 04 Forester and wonder where I have to go to get a decent price without a big haggle.

Is there a website in the US where one central office will put me in touch with a retail seller of a new Forester?

The Subaru.com website claims to provide a "build it yourself" feature where you can then get a price quote from a nearby dealer.

WRONG! I tried that and got several notes from Subaru.com which said "your request has been forwarded to ...."

When a dealer replied, he asked what I'd be willing to offer. I asked for the price quote and got a "Invoice plus 4% or $1000" figure.

Can anyone steer me to a better service than this or am I simply whistling Dixie?

Look under New Cars, find the '04 Forrester and then look on the left side for 'Discussions'. People usually post there with info on what they paid, etc.

Instead of taking the Subaru.com approach, what I would recommend for any car purchase is to design the car you want, decide what you want to pay (make it reasonable), then work by fax and email only with as many dealers as you can within 50-75 miles of your home. In your correspondence to the dealers indicate the car you are looking for and let the dealers bid on your business by sending you back their best offer. If you already know you want a Forester and don't need a test drive, then do not step foot into a dealership until it is time to pick up the car. Car dealers negotiate for a living and are expert on reading your body language, etc you can even the playing field a bit by using email and faxes and then phone just to complete the deal. Be ready to play hardball, if you are sure that the prices you are getting are out of line, then politely tell the dealer to contact you when they are ready to sell the car for your price. This works best when you are not under pressure to get a car right away because it might take a couple of months. Sooner or later the dealer will call you towards the end of a month that they haven't made their numbers.

All IMHO, of course.

and took the quote to adealer who matched it. My new WRX is now on factory order and I spent atotal of 10 minutes at the dealer. I am pleased! David

Well, I got four very helpful replies to my question and wanted to say thanks. Good data out there and I now know more than one place to find it.

Thanks again, all! I'm now whistling "Happy days are here again!" and closer to buying that new Forester.
