The WRX STI is definitely getting long-in-the-tooth these days, it hasn't made any significant improvements in the 300-HP 2.5L engine that's been powering it now for the last 10 years. 10 years ago, it was technological marvel, now it's out of date. The regular WRX's 2L turbo is newer, much more efficient, but only slightly less powerful. If they tweak up that existing turbo-2L and that can become the new STI. It might still be too late as the Ford Focus RS is going to have a 350-HP

4-cylinder. So it'll be down by about 25-HP.

After son got rid of 2006 WRX hot rodded to STi specs. it was dyno tested for over 300HP. That car was sold in less than one hour when advertised in local Kijiji. Then new BMW 355Xi stock. What a difference between two, the Subaru and BMW. Now I became to realize car's performance is not only how much power engine produces but many other factors. Now I understand why people buy Audi, BMW, etc. For example I did not have to hang on the steering going around sharp curves. Driving BMW just feels like driving normal straight level road with some bragging.

I think that's basically the fact that the STI hasn't been updated majorly in such a long while. Even the newest WRX's are better cars than the STI's. I think maybe once they update the WRX with the newer spec engine, it'll likely do a lot better these days.

When the STI was introduced in 2004, it was awesome, great handling, lots of power, but it barely changed in the 12 years since. Subaru just sat on their laurels with that car, and waited for the competition to catch up. Now, you got some cars that can do more than 1.0g on the skidpad, because they have real wings on their backs. Subaru's wings are real too, but maybe not taking full advantage of the aerodynamics.
