Common rail diesel a new invention? Hardly - it's been used in diesel-electric locomotives since the mid 1930's and has been used in diesel engines powering almost all large marine craft used by military agencies since WW2! 8-)

Not looking to start a fight, but which trains in the 1930s had common rail? I thought most of them tended to be 2 stroke and therefore blew the charge in with hp air. Unless you are counting the low pressure delivery pipe as a "common rail".

On a slighlty related topic, I got to see a very interesting boat here in Cairns a few years ago, powered by three Napier Deltic diesels normally used for trains. It also had a V8 Cat for just cruising around, but I'll leave it to your imagination how fast a 60ft wooden hull could go with 9,000hp. I only saw it running on two (the third one being broken was why they were in Cairns to meet parts and a fitter from England) and it was pretty impressive.

I have never seen anything as mechanically beautiful as those Deltic engines.

Reminds me of that car commercial that claims they're the originators of headlights that turn with the car. The Tucker had that feature in the fifties.

We do not have any Fiat junk in the US. as I know you still do in Aus. The only thing worse than their cars is the French junk. Ran them both out of this country years ago. Could'nt hold up to American standards. You guys must not expect too much from your cars.
