ANPR technology

Specialised technology or are there implementations available off the shelf? I'm not sure what I'd do with it, but automatically logging the reg of the cars in front and behind me seems useful. Somehow. I'm not sure why.

Ed Chilada ( snipped-for-privacy@nospam.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

Webcam, laptop, video capture software, can't imagine there's anything too clever about it.

But... why?

If it's that important to get somebody's plate, just remember it and write it down when you get a mo.

Keep a digital voice memo recorder in your car.

I saw a TV programme about a Skoda enthusiast who had a big book in which he noted all the registrations he'd spotted on Skodas. Was it you?

Capturing the images is the easy bit, all off-the-shelf parts will do that. It's automatically interpreting the images that's the tricky bit!

Well I was kinda thinking if something happened to you, you'd have the registrations of the people around you at the time. Witnesses perhaps. Obviously you couldn't keep writing all those down.

Having given it some more thought (only a little, heh), maybe it'd be useful if it did real-time DVLA lookups so you could find out if that BMW behind you really is an M3 or a tarted up 318...

When googling, remember that ANPR is more of a UK term. It's also called NPR, CPR, LPR etc.
