AC question?

Also, make sure the shop uses REAL R12 and not a "replacement mix". BTW, a can of real R134 costs $8 at Walmart. From the Interdynamics web site:

"25. What about some of these "drop-in" Replacement Refrigerants for R-12 that I have heard about? Are they any good?

The EPA points out that only R-134a has been tested and approved by automakers for use in their vehicles, and it is also the only Replacement Refrigerant for R-12 that is widely available.

EPA adds that there is NO SUCH THING AS A "DROP-IN", since refrigerants CANNOT BE MIXED in an A/C System. In addition, ANY REPLACEMENT REFRIGERANT MUST HAVE:

  • Unique Fittings for the Service Ports * Unique Charging Devices * Unique Label

In addition, any replacement refrigerant containing R-22 requires replacing system hoses with Barrier Hoses.

It should also be noted that some of the more talked about Replacement Refrigerants are made from up to 80% R-134a. "

Changing to R134a is easy. Drain the oil from the used parts, Compressor, Evaporator and Condenser. If your hoses are in good shape, they are reusable. Pull the valve cores from the fill fittings and screw on the R134a fill fittings, They should be steel R134a fittings, not the cheap walmart stuff. Your R134a Retro kit will come with ester oil. Add the proper amount called for that compressor to the compressor. IBuy a NEW Drier. Replace all the o-rings on the fittings with new ones from the retrokit. Once its all bolted up, have it evacuated and charged with 80% of what the R12's charge weight called for. IE: R12 28 oz,,,,,,,, then R134a would be 22 oz

As the website develops, all this will be written up on
