1971 Autostick Bug Update

Thanks to all those who have offered advise and answered questions about my Bugs.

I just got my 91 autostick super bug/beetle out of the shop. Cost just over 1500. With most of that in labor (47 Hours 940 dollars) . Has new Master Cyliner, Wheel Cylinders, Brake Pads and Shoes, Better Drums. Engine still could use some work as it only fires on 3 cylinders but he lossened up the other one and said it might start working. Battery try as that was the only area with rust on the pans. he also tightened up some bolts that were loose. Also new sterring in the front and he adjust the sterring so their was not as much play. Also pulled a starter off of one of my other bugs as this one didn't want to work all the time. Electrical was bad as well. Some lights didn't work which he fixed and the Ingition Switch was bad so he wired me a button so now I turn the key and then push the button and hit the gas to start it. We got luckly and the transmission shifts great.

Still have lots to do on it. Need front windshield replaced which I have 2 good ones in parts cars, Probablly replace the seats since the ones in the front don't match each other. Will need paint and body work which I am still trying to decided on the color I want.. And eventually some motor work but it runs good. If it doesn't rain tomorrow I will tow it home.

Thanks Steven

I have Bug me Videos and have done some work on another car but I haven't even finishe the brakes and I've had the car over a year. I'm in school, Own a business and in the fall work 5 to 7 days a week sometimes working 40 to 50 days in a row. This sumer I will eb away from home and no bug to work on. I'd love to be able to do some work on them in a timely manner but I got tired of having 6 bugs and none of them running.

I don't understand why you didn't replace the Ignition Switch. I think it would be easier then adding a button.

No offense intended, but if you have that little time and that many cars that need work, why not sell them all and get one solid one? If you don't have time to do a relatively simple thing as the brakes, you'll want a car that requires as little maintenance as possible.

or possibly he likes his car and is okay with not working on them himself.....there are folks like that ya know?

Yeah, I hear ya - That could very well be. Working on it is most the fun to me but everyone is different. That's not really where I was going with my comment, though.

Not having a solid car and having someone else do all the work on it makes for a very expensive hobby. If one already has that little time, it is just frustrating to have it be unreliable on top of that. Driving it and having to tow it home would really piss me off, especially if I had just spent good money on it. You would hope the car does not need to be a daily driver.

All in all, It will squeeze the fun out of it quick, imo. It might be more practical to get one solid bug that's only immediate need is cosmetic help (i.e. paint).

My mechanic said it would take a bit of time to remove the steering and replace the new Switch which would cost 30. He'd still have to find the short that caused the old one to stop working. Saved me some money and got me out quickier so he could get someone else in. I wanted my car out of the shop before I went to MO.

I do like working on them but when I do get a little time I try to work on them but even watching the Bug Me Videos 3 or 4 times I'm not

100% sure of what I am doing. When I do finish my brakes I'm going to take them somewhere to be double checked. I would have loved to have the time to work on the one I took to my mechanic But no way I would have been able to do what he did in 15 or 16 days. And I'd love to drive this home but I want get comfortable and secure driving it in a control environment before I take it on the road. When I get back from MO in August I will have or do some more work on it to make it daily driver status. And I will get tags and Insurtance when I get back. Which I will probably only drive it a couple days a week.

As far as selling all off but one. That's not going to happen. I have one I am going take the seats and Front Windshield for the one my Mechanic is working on. The one I am trying to do most of the work on my self I am going to keep working on. And I have a junk one that I hope to restore someday just because after all I went through to save it from the crusher I can't bare to part it out and crush it. Now the one that I am removing the seats and glass and another I have sold parts off off and a junk 66 they might go to the crusher one day but not anytime soon. I love having three bugs lined up in the back yard..

I understand - I've gotten attached to mine as well.

Well, I hope one day you'll get more time or your mechanic will get it totally bug (no pun intended) free so you can enjoy it to the fullest.

Were you able to get any more info about why it's only hitting on three cylinders?

He didn't say and it talked like he would have to remove the engine to furture diagnose it and I didn't want that. I had asked him before how long it took him to rebuilt a engine and he said a month. But whe only works 4 hours M-Thur and 2 hours on Friday. But a month is a lot of labor.

Kinda of cool I have always loved VW's and yesterday was the first time I had ever driven one. Pretty neat. I do need to adjust the seat to my liking and install seat belts.

Thanks Steven
