Alloy Wheels on 84 760 - Cleaning

Has anyone got any advise for cleaning the alloy wheels on this 84

760, they have blackened are not cleaning up decently.

I have tried to clean small test areas with no luck, it gets a little cleaner but still not bright.

Have tried mild detergent cleaners, wadding polish, turtle wax wheel cleaner, and Maguire's products with no success.

The paint on this car is nearly flawless, but the dirty wheels make it stand out somewhat.

I know since they are coated wheels that anything abrasive will temporarily clean them, but then will be a nightmare to maintain after that...

Try a fosphate sollution in water. Worked fine with me. This mixture is also used after welding.

Phosphate cleaner. Hmmm. wonder what brand name would contain that, now that I re-read your post, I will try a welding supply house for some.

I had the opportunity to service some AKAI R/R's in my A/V days, real fine equipment. Several friends of mine still have their models from the early 1970'S, and they still work great.

I think you can buy Tri Sodium Phosphate aka TSP at paint stores You should not have to use too much. That is a bag of the stuff should last years.

Oh, THAT's what it is, I know TSP, you also use it on walls, a cleaner for prepping before wallpaper.

Now it makes sense, and it's easy to find as well.

I brought the "baby" to a car wash last week, and asked the detail guy there what he could do with the stained/blackened wheels.....

He replied "They are toast, gone, no way".

I will try some of the TSP on them, and just see if there's any hope.

Would hate to go to a steel wheel, since the light alloy wheels must have something to do with the fact that this car is fast, and the last thing I want to do is add more weigh to it....
