92 Jetta Ac/heater problems

I have a 92 Mexican Jetta with 210 K actual miles on the odomete (even though it says 645K). The Ac used to work great and blow cold, but lately it started to blow less cold, going to cool, then tepid, to warm and then hot when I have it on AC and the temp lever all the way over to cold. It also blows hot when I have it on "vent" and theoretically the AC condensor shouldn't even be a factor. I wonder if I am having a leaking heater core (I have smelled some glycol when I turn up the heat in the winter), but tehre is no leaking coolant in the passenger compartment.

Exactly how does the 92 Jetta control the heat? Older cars used to have cable that ran to a valve on the heater hose, but now I suspect that the heater core always has hot coolant running through it and somehow a door opens up to blend hot or cold air in a mixing plenum? Or is the coolant valve under the dash attached to the heater core? Either way - i am not looking forward to spending $1000 or more to fix this problem, espeially since the clutch is beginning to slip on this beast - I just might see if I can find another similar car in good shape and use my 92 for parts.

Any suggestions - e-mail to me at usenetreader at earthlink dot net

Just flaps for fresh air to bypass the heater core or direct it through it. I don't believe that there is a valve to stop/slow the flow of coolant through the heater core.

Is the a/c compressor working? Are one of the a/c lines cold and the other hot? THEN You might have to check the cable operation of the heater controls. If not you may have a leak and the refrigerant has left the system. :-(

Just some thoughts! Have a safe 4th! later, dave cc: to you

NG questions are answered in the newsgroup, not emailed directly. Have you seen bits of dried foam coming out of the center vents? It's likely the sealing foam that seals the internal flap doors (hot/cold mixing) is gone and isn't sealing of the hot side when you want it cold. Lost on information on the 'net about this. foam kits are cheap, Texas Parts Guy
