what are the chances ...

of findng the previous owner of a car, currently sitting on a lot? Would a 2005 RL with only 8K miles be a bit of a stretch? I'm discussing the car with the sales people and they're willing to tell me the state, the car was last registered in. Does anyone know any means or avenues to get further than that? thx

Maybe you can track it by the VIN.

I actually gave the VIN to the service dept and they looked in the service records database. The mileage was verified, as were past services on the car, but there's "more", that they can't tell me.. hmm wonder what that is..

Probably the guy's name and address.

I've got the service records from dealers before, the previous owner's name and address really isn't necessary.

Though, one time I got printed paperwork where they'd used a marker pen to black out his name and address. It didn't take much to see what it was.

"More" is anything that would cause privacy concerns. I imagine the previous owner might be upset if the dealership gave out his name.

Why do you want to contact the previous owner? A car with only 8K on it won't have suffered much from neglectful treatment or abuse, if that's what you're worried about.

I traded an Accord in for my first Prelude, and got a call from the girl who bought it from the dealer, she wanted to know what the wierd sound was when she left the headlights on and turned off the ignition.I had made my own "headlight-ON warning" circuit,so I would not inadvertantly leave the HLs on and drain the battery. She decided to keep it.

My 94 Integra GSR has a chime for when the HLs are on and the door is opened;it's caught me a few times. IMO,a feature every car should have.

I'd be suspicious of WHY the car was traded in with only 8K miles on it,for a year's ownership. Maybe a "lemon" the dealer is trying to dump?

Our Acura TL has less than 7,000 miles in two years, and our Honda Pilot just passed 4,000 miles after 20 months.

Some people simply don't drive very much...

That's my fear exactly, and the 'More" they don't want to tell me, could be the reason

Maybe, but sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

I traded in a 12 month old TSX with just under 10K miles. There wasn't anything wrong with it at all.

If it's legally a lemon, it will show on the Carfax report. I think that anyone who buys a used car without doing a Carfax on it is daft, but hey, maybe that's just me.

My 94 Integra GSR has only 57,000 miles on it. But these are unusual exceptions, not common.

Chances are about 99.99999% you're worried about nothing.

My 2001 TL has 40K miles and my 1997 Tacoma 22K miles.

I traded in a 2001 Lexus ES for my 2006 TL, The ES was traded in with only

12,400 miles on it. Was there a story behind it yes but nothing another buyer would need to worry about, that's for sure. I got it in '05 from a relative of my wife and it only had 7,500 miles then.

Evidently, low mileage autos are becoming more common;Progressive Insurance is testing (in Florida)insurance discounts up to 15% for low miles-per year driving, verified with odometer readings. This was in today's Orlando Sentinel.

I suspect it's due to more people/families having two or more cars,or perhaps a work vehicle,so mileage gets divided between them.

Sorry to spin off thread here but Jim you've touched on something I ran into a brick wall over. I'm in Australia and have a 2005 Honda Euro (equivalent of the Acura TSX). I've been to Honda about wanting to install a headlight cut-out function when you turn off the ignition and leave the vehicle. They can give me no answers and one person questioned warranty cover being voided if someone else did it. Have the TSXs got this function on them? If so, and with a very similar wiring harness, would it be easy for a good auto electrician to come up with a solution for my car? It has the warning bells for when you leave the lights on, but I actually think a "lights out function" is terrific. My wife has an 11 year old Camry with it, how hard's it got to be.
